What are ’Real Nappies’?
Real nappies are the modern version of the terry towelling nappies, or ’terry squares’, used by our parents and grandparents.
Easy to use, and no pins! While terry squares are still used, most parents now opt for a more convenient version of it, elasticated around the legs and waist, and fastened with velcro, poppers or ’Nappi Nippas’ rather than pins. While some nappies such as Bumbles, Bamboozles and Bambinex require a seperate waterproof wrap, others, such as Wonderoo, bumGenius and Tots Bots Easyfit, have the waterproof layer built in, making them practically as easy to use as a disposable nappy.
Modern fabrics. Nappy fabrics are no longer limited to terry towelling and cotton. Newer fabrics such as bamboo, fleece and micro-fibre provide more choice to parents in terms of slimness, absorbency and drying times.
A fashion statement! Until recently the vast majority of reusable nappies were white or natural, unbleached cream. Nowadays there are a whole host of colours available including:
- Pink / lavender nappies for baby girls
- Baby blue to navy blue nappies for baby boys
- Red nappies for Christmas
- or even animal prints!

Easy to remove solids. Removing solids from the nappy is easy with a ’flushable nappy liner’. Just remove the soiled liner from the nappy and flush it down the toilet.
No soaking required! Advances in fabrics and washing machines mean that cloth nappies no longer need soaking - just store them dry, in a bucket and once the bucket is full transfer them to the washing machine. Set the machine to 60 degrees and off they go.
The different nappy ’types’ include:
- 2 -part nappies require a seperate waterproof nappy over the top of them. They give very good containment eg. Tots Bots Bamboozle, Bambinex, Easy Peasy Bumble.
- Pocket nappies / all in one nappies are very easy to use and generally fit from birth through to potty training. These have a built-in waterproof layer. eg, Tots Bots Easyfit, BumGenius, Wonderoo, Blueberry.
